Find contact points in the wardrobe

Carefully run a hand over the empty shelf and check hangers for rough edges. A projecting fitting on a neighbouring bag or an open zip may touch fine fabric. Arrange such objects separately. This often helps more than another cover that merely hides the underlying problem.

Remove the top fully rather than dragging it between closely packed pieces. If there is no room, reduce what occupies that area. A small free space makes daily access easier and avoids pulling sleeves or shoulders each time.

Choose hanging or folding for the piece

Woolmark's care guidance distinguishes woven wool garments, which can use suitable hangers, from knitted pieces, which should be folded. This illustrates why colour or the broad category of top should not determine storage alone. For other materials and particular constructions, the relevant manufacturer's instructions still matter.

Where folding is appropriate, use a clean surface and arrange sleeves without sharp pulling. A low stack is easier to use than a tall tower. For a hanging piece, the hanger should suit the shoulders without creating obvious projecting points. Check later whether storage is changing the shape.

Store compatible things together

Heavy bags do not belong on a folded fine blouse. Loose belt hooks or jewellery can create contact points too. Give them their own place. If using a cover, the top should fit without strongly compressing sleeves and hem.

Put clothing away fully dry and check for visible marks or damage before longer storage. A seam needing repair belongs on a manageable task list rather than disappearing among other pieces. If suspicious changes such as new holes appear, investigate the cause and initially examine affected pieces separately.

Arrange access according to use

A frequently worn delicate top needs an accessible position. An occasional piece can sit protected farther back but should remain easy to identify. Briefly label the contents when using several similar covers. You then need not open and shift everything to find one particular blouse.
