Start with the label

Eileen Fisher's linen and cotton guidance notes that details such as lining or decoration can require particular care. The fibre name alone therefore cannot determine the method. Read drying and ironing instructions before beginning the wash too. A piece requiring professional care should not be washed at home based on general linen advice.

If you want a record of the shape, photograph the dry garment flat on a suitable surface beforehand. This is not about measuring every crease precisely. The picture mainly shows how side seams, the button opening and hem relate to each other.

Find the original arrangement

Lift the washed piece carefully and support its weight. Lay or hang it according to the permitted drying method. Gently arrange twisted sleeves and folded-under hems. If a side seam sits diagonally, first check whether the fabric is merely twisted rather than immediately pulling one corner.

On a shirt, arrange the collar and button opening; on trousers, arrange both legs. Use small movements and stop if there is clear resistance. Forceful stretching does not replace suitable care and cannot reliably repair an already changed garment.

Treat creases according to preference

Linen may retain visible texture after drying. You do not need to remove every crease. If you want to smooth it, first check the permitted ironing or steam treatment and the appliance instructions. Advice for another linen product does not authorise the same treatment for yours.

Do not treat clothes while wearing them, and use an appropriate working surface. Begin on an inconspicuous area where the care instructions permit the treatment. With unclear guidance or a valuable delicate piece, a professional question is more useful than experimenting with increasing heat.

Store it dry and record the experience

Check doubled fabric areas before putting the piece in the wardrobe. Record the care used and whether the resulting shape felt comfortable. These details help when asking about an unexpected change. Do not alter the programme, drying and smoothing simultaneously next time, or it will remain unclear which step made the difference.
